It's difficult to imagine a more suitable environment for crafting high performance motorcycles than the racing capitol of the world but one thing is for certain; the 40,000-square-foot homage to motorcycles in Brownsburg, Indiana wasn't built overnight. The Vance & Hines Race Shop has evolved through nearly four decades.
Now, however, the site stands tall among the suburb of Indianapolis. Vance & Hines Race Shop President Byron Hines made the decision to move the shop and its valued employees to the Mid West long before the doors opened in 2004.
The reasons for moving the shop that specializes in all 4-cylinder as well as all Harley-Davidson motorcycles from the quiet confines of Trinidad, Colorado were simple: Access and availability.
"We have twice as much room at the new shop and it's centrally located in the United States," Hines said. "With a 15-race schedule and customers based all over the country, it made a lot of sense for us to move here. With the space we're able to do more development and with the location we're able to connect with suppliers and customers more easily. Logistically, it was a great move for the Race Shop." Less than 10 key employees at the shop combine for more than 100 years of motorcycle and motorcycle racing experience. - experience that gets passed down to the customer.
"We do a lot of street bikes and other performance applications," Hines said. "We do all kinds of motor work, install exhaust systems and even do a complete motor package. We also work on all Harleys and we specialize in the V-Rods and other sport oriented setups. We can do a big bore kit on the Harley’s too. We pretty much work on anything that needs high performance upgrades."
While the two-bike Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team joins numerous other NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series entries that make Brownsburg their home, Hines and his staff were intent on making the shop more than just a building good enough to house a race team.
The state-of-the-art facility is equipped to make an ordinary motorcycle an extraordinary high-performance machine. The Race Shop features four Dyno rooms including three Superflow 901 Engine Dynos as well as a Dynojet Model 250i Motorcycle Chassis Dyno. The shop also sports eight CNC machines including a Five Axis CNC, a CNC Valve Job machine, various cylinder head machines along with lathes and mills needed to get the job done.
Needless to say, with the Vance & Hines name comes a prestigious and technologically superior in-house pipe-bending system as well. Having the best equipment possible allows the Race Shop to produce the parts that give customers the performance edge. The on-site machining also gives Hines and his staff the chance to control quality as they create and produce the advanced, high-quality items that separate the Vance & Hines Race Shop from every other shop.
"We have and use the latest equipment and that makes a big difference," Hines said. "We make sure we stay on the edge of leading technology, especially in the most critical areas. We are high-performance oriented and being able to create the equipment and install it all in one place is such an important part of our performance strategy.
"We engineer the parts ourselves and that enables us to design and create more parts in a short amount of time that help us win on the race track. We pride ourselves in being able to pass that down to the customer and make sure they are getting the best parts and service available in the high-performance industry. This facility makes it all possible."
