First-round losses by Matt Smith and Chip Ellis, his closest rivals in the 2008 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle standings, allowed Hines to add to his season points lead.

Hines qualified second for the event with a pass of 7.028 seconds, just behind Chris Rivas, who made a run of 7.027 seconds in the second qualifying round on Friday to take the number one position. Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec qualified seventh with a 7.106 pass.

When Hines won the Pro Stock Motorcycle title at the O'Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals in 2006, it was the first time he had earned a second win at the same facility. He thought that was cool – until he won his third race there, of course. "I have no idea why we have had such great success in Memphis," Hines said. "I think maybe it's the heat. The bonus race is held annually at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. Hines beat Chip Ellis in the final of the bonus event on Saturday en route to a $25,000 payday for the win. Eddie Krawiec earned his first Pro Stock Motorcycle runner-up finish the hard way Sunday at the FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals. It was just his ninth appearance on his Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson V-Rod and his first event at Infineon Raceway, but it didn't come easy. "From the very beginning of the weekend when we unloaded the V-Rod we were working on it, just fine tuning to make it more competitive as the weekend progressed," Krawiec said. "We didn't have any down time but this Screamin' Eagle team works so well together that we found our way to the final round. This crew makes it possible for me to be calm and cool and I felt comfortable on the bike all weekend."
